Pictures of arctic foxes taken at the Southwick Zoo. Arctic Foxes are also known as Snow Foxes due to their native environment of the Arctic Tundra and their snow white pelt. These foxes are actually grey/brown in color during the summer months and don’t get their snowy white coat until the winter season.

This is just one of their many natural adaptations to their extreme climate. Unlike other foxes who have pointy ears, Artic Foxes’ ears are rounded to help conserve body heat. Other adaptations include an incredibly keen sense of hearing for finding prey beneath the snow and the warmest fur of any mammal. Unfortunately, the warmth provided by their fur is also sought by humans who often use their pelts for hats, coats, and trim on clothing. Artic Foxes like to eat voles and lemmings but will also catch salmon or forage for berries.
