Here are some of the characteristics of apes:

• Apes don't have tails
• Apes only live in Africa and Asia
• Apes are most often bigger than monkeys.
• Apes have a more upright body posture
• Apes rely on sightmore than smell
  
• Apes have a large brain to body ratio

Among types of apes are gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, chimpanzees, humans, and a group of lesser apes called gibbons.

Monkeys are divides into two categories: Old world monkeys and new world monkeys. Old world monkeys live in Africa, Asia, India, and Japan. New world monkeys live in Mexico, Central and South America.

Old world monkeys:

• are larger than new world monkeys
• have flattened finger nails
• have a bigger, padded, buttocks to sit on
• have narrow, downward pointing nostrils

Some examples of old world monkeys are the macaque, baboon, snow monkeys, and the colobus.

New world Monkeys:

• Have long tails that are sometimes prehensile (grab and hold things like branches)
• Circular nostrils
• No buttocks padding
• No cheek pouches

Examples of new world monkeys are the callimicos, marmosets, tamarins, lemurs, and capuchins.
