Pictures of Bearded Dragons (Pogona vitticeps) from Australia.
Originating in Australia, this reptile may grow up to 2 feet! They feed on insects, earthworms, and leafy greens. They can live up to 10 years. Their native habitat is dry and sparsely vegetated. When frightened, they flatten their body and puff out their spiny (bearded) lower jaw pouch as a defense display.
When threatened or aroused, the bearded dragon expands a spiny pounch under their jaw to make them appear larger. This pouch, especially in its expanded state, resembles a beard, giving the animal its name. This pouch can also turn black, making it look even more beard-like.
