Boobook Owl pictures (Ninox novaeseelandiae), from Australia.
The Southern Boobook is the smallest owl in Australia. Like other owl species, the Southern Boobook is noctural. They're often observed perched on an open branch or treetop, emitting a distinctive 'boobook' or 'mopoke' sound, and fly only to nest or feed.
The Southern Boobook feeds on insects and other small animal species. Feeding takes place mostly at night. Once detected, flying prey (such as moths and small bats) are seized in mid-air, while most of their diet is ground-dwelling prey that is pounced upon. When threatened, they sit upright, with feathers pressed tight against hte body, and turn side-on to the source.
