Pictures of Doves

Pictures of 15 different species of doves and pigeons, including the mourning dove and the lilac-capped fruit dove. Doves and pigeons are both closely related, and are members of the Columbidae family.

Doves and Pigeons constitute the family Columbidae. Within their family are about 300 species. Though the terms Dove and Pigeon are often used interchangeably, the smaller of the birds are often called doves, and the larger, pigeons. Some traits of Doves and Pigeons include:

  • Stout bodies
  • Short necks
  • Thin short beaks with skin a lump of skin on top called a Cere
  • Lay one or two eggs
  • Flimsy nest
