Flamingo Pictures, Pictures of Flamingos

Up-close, detailed and free pictures of Lesser Flamingos, Caribbean Flamingos, and American Flamingos.

There are six species of flamingos, all found new large bodies of salt water. The two Old World  species range from the southern coast of AEurope east to India and south to the salt lakes of centeral and southern Africa. The four new world species are found throughout the Caribbean, the Galapagos Islands, and on salt lakes high in the Andes.

The flamingos' unique down-curved billed are used to sift from the water the small plant and animal particles that make up the bulk of their diet. Flamingos form large colonies for feeding and breeding.

Flamingos can stand on one leg up to 4 hours at a time. There are several theories as to why they do this, including that it helps to regulate their body temperature and also that it allows one foot and leg to dry out.
