Pictures of golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia).
Lion tamarins are monogamous. The father and older offspring rear the young, carrying them on their backs and returning them to the mother only for feedings.
Tamarins are gravely endangered due to human encroachment on their habitats. To make matters worse, in the 1960s, an illegal trade arose to satisfy demand for them as pets. Today, they are considered critically endangered. A wild reserve has been established for their protection, and they are thriving in captivity.
