Animal:  Silvery Marmoset

 

Species: Callithrix Argentatus

Lifespan: Silvery Marmosets live to be about 10 years old.

Size & Weight: The Silvery Marmoset grows to be between 7 and 10 inches long, and has a tail that is between 10 to 14 lbs.

Habitat: Silvery Marmosets live in the South American rain forest of Western Brazil, North Eastern Brazil, and Western Brazil. Though Silvery Marmosets prefer the rain forest, people have cleared the forest to build plantation, forcing the Marmosets to expand their range.

Family Life: Female Silvery Marmosets typically give birth to two babies at a time. When the infants aren't feeding from their mother, they are carried around by their fathers and older siblings. The small colony of Silvery Marmosets sleep together in hollow trees at night, and are awake during the day (diurnal). To mark their territory, Silvery Marmosets use scent glands to emit an odor that let's other Marmosets know where the boundaries are. If another colony of Silvery Marmosets challenges the boundaries, they will set off a warning by howling, lowering their eyebrows, and smacking their lips.

Diet: The Silvery Marmoset's diet mainly consists of tree sap. They also eat insects and fruit.
