| Pictures of monarch butterflies (species Danaus plexippus). This orange-and-black butterfly is the most well-known butterfly in North America, but they're not the easiest to photograph. While they're large (which makes them easier to focus on), they move almost constantly. When they are collecting pollen, they hold their wings closed, which doesn't make for a good shot. To get a picture with the wings open, I had to snap a shot at exactly the right moment--they briefly open their wings from time-to-time.
