All my pictures of pandas in one place. These were taken at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. I was there on a business trip for just one day--but the panda happened to be really active that day.

Animal: Giant Panda

Species:  Ailuropoda melanoleuca is the scientific name for the Giant Panda species. The Giant panda was once a part of a genus that contained four other panda species, but they are all extinct.

Lifespan: Pandas live to be about 15-20 years in the wild, but can live up to 30 years in captivity with the proper care!

Size & Weight: The average panda is 5ft long and about 300 lbs. Males are generally a bit larger than females.

Habitat:Giant pandas can be found high int he mountains in the damp, foggy, bamboo forests of southwestern China.

Diet: Though it is true that pandas primary food is bamboo (they eat as much as 84lbs of it per day), they also eat grass, bulbs, fruit, insects, and sometimes carrion!

Family Life: Pandas are solitary animals. They only meet up to mate, and their breeding season is very short. Once a panda is born, they are highly dependent upon their mother for the first 2 years of their life.

*Fun Facts*

  • Though they seem quiet, pandas make several noises! THey roar, bleat like a sheep, growl and honk!
  • Newborn pandas are hairless and are roughly the size of a stick of butter!
