Species: There are many many species of rat (though I couldn't find an exact number), but the most popular include the Black and Brown rat.
Lifespan: In the wild, rat live to be less than a year old. However, when kept as pets they live 2-5 years.
Size & Weight: Though it depends ont he species, the average rat is 227 grams. The largest species of rat was recently found (2009) in Papua New Guinea and was names the Bosavi Wooly rat. The Bosavi Wooly rat weighed 3.3 lbs and was over 30 inches long!
Habitat: Though it is believed that rats originated in Asia, they are now found all over the world.Rats live in burrows that have large tunnel systems and nests. Many species are found close to where humans can be found because rats like to scavange off of us.
Diet: Rats will eat just about anything they can find. They eat meat, fish, vegetables, earthworms, insects, nuts and fruits.
Family Life: Rats live in large colonies that are loosely established into a mated pair and their offspeing, or a dominant male a a bunch of potential mates.
Rats are typically good swimmers!
Some species of rat can birth more than 20 pups per litter!
