Animal: Maned wolf

Species:  The scientific name for the Maned wolf is Chrysocyon brachyurus.

Lifespan: Int he wild, Maned wolves live to be about 15 years old. In captivity they have been known to live up to 17 years.

Size & Weight: Maned wolves are about 3 feet tall and 50 lbs. At birth, the Maned wolf weighs less than one pound!

Diet: Nearly half of the Maned wolfs diet consists of fruits and vegetation. They also eat small rodents, birds, armadillos, reptiles, and insects.

Habitat:  Maned wolves inhabit the open savanas, grasslands, and scrub forests of South America.

Family Life: Maned wolves live in monogamous pairs that only meet up during the mating season. Mothers typically give birth to 4-5 pups. The fathers role witht he pups is unknown int he wild, but in captivity they feed their pups by regurgitating their food,

  • When hunting, Maned wolves pounce on their prey much like a fox does.
  • The nickname for the Maned wolf is the Stilt-legged Fox, becuase they resemble a fox with long legs.
